New Regulaltions - Septic Tanks and Sewage Treatment Plants
New Regulations regarding discharges from septic tanks and sewage treatment plants were brought in effect from the 6th April 2010 under the Environmental Permitting Regulations.
By the 1st January 2012 all discharges from septic tanks and sewage treatment plants were to be registered with the Environment Agency under these Regulations. This applies to both new and existing systems, no matter how old.
After the 6th April 2010 anyone intending to discharge 5 cubic metres per day or less to surface water or 2 cubic metres per day or less to ground, may be eligible for a free Exemption. The government has now announced a review which means that the Environment Agency will not, for the time being, require compulsory registration.
